I'm not Creative

Brainstorming of Initial Ideas

Idea1: All the Tvs with their own tv channel gather together to watch the MTV parade telecast by the Mother of MTV. In the parade, all her kids are maching proudly carrying the mtv programme they are having.

Having realise that there's one tv marching elegantly with noise being telecast, they decided to kick him out from the parade. The whole concept is about MTV only previewing good shows and filter out the bad one.

Idea 2: Everything starts from the oldies Mircophone where all the music starts revolving around with the it. All the MTV2 programme appear from the microphone pole. It's all about microphone that kick starts the world music and singers. No Mic no Mtv2.

Idea3: Lots of TV piling up to form a hill and the top landed a giant TV that is being crown. Portraying World leading music channel MTV2.

Idea 4: The whole idea is to play the MTV logo around with instruments like guitar and drum at the side and having the last scene as two headed dog barking away with the music note appearing and the whole logo morphing into MTV2.

Idea 5: Having MTV changes with time using the hour hand at 1 o'clock initially and moving into 2 o'clock showing Mtv and Mtv2 respectively. The clock will morph into a sun indirectly portraying a new and brighter outlook of MTV2.

Idea6: Hourglass is a tool used to measure time in the past. The whole concept is to portray how MTV changes with time and eventually making a greater height by having a new sister, channel MTV2. It revolves around the change of time and the things MTV currently have.

Idea 7: It's a fun and quirky idea showing MTV can't balance itself without his sister, MTV2. Now with 2 mtv channel, they manage to balance their music well. Tagline, Music balance your soul.

Idea 8: A simple guitar with a clock attached to it where the clock will be running in a fast speed with the playing of guitar. Portraying the concept of MTV non-stop hits.

Idea9: MTV is the music generator which generates great music that one of the music note is so huge that it forms into a big earphone.

Idea10: It's about the typography of MTV scatter and jumping around on top of the radio bass due to the vibration of the bass that it can generate. The concept of showing MTV2 being very hyper active and follow your rhythmn.

Idea11: MTV2 replacing the heart organ and the only channel that keeps your life going. With tagline MTV PUMP UP YOUR LIVE. The whole concept showing that MTV2 is part of you.

Idea12: A castle-like ambience to celebrate the new relaunch of MTV2 with all sort of twisting polygon all around the ambient.

Chosen Channel ID & Idea For Assignment 4

Use of hourglass as my concept, portraying how MTV changes with time and continue going for greater height producing a new channel, MTV2. The MTV logo will be revolving around in the hourglass and after a period of time, the MTV's famous block logo were eliminated and the two-headed dog logo will replace after it, showing the change of time.

Research on how MTV2 came about

Before MTV2 was born. MTV: Music Television was launched on August 1, 1981. The whole objective of the channel being launced was to show music videos, news and music-related events. Today, MTV broadcasts a variety of music, pop culture, youth culture and reality television shows aimed at young adults. It features deep, original content including music premieres and exclusives, convergent shows like TRL and Control Freak.

MTV's programming format was created by the visionary media executive, Bob Pittman, who later became president and chief executive officer of MTV Networks.

Station IDs and slogans

MTV's innovative station IDS were created by independent animation studios like Colossal Pictures (San Francisco), Broadcast Arts (Washington, D.C.), and Buzzco (New York). The radical MTV logo was designed by tiny New York design firm Manhattan Design (Pat Gorman, Frank Olinsky, and Patty Rogoff). Alan Goodman and Fred Seibert developed the identity and promotional strategies that put MTV in the forefront of the world media industry by establishing the idea that television channels were brands.

Many of the more successful musicians featured on MTV could frequently be seen doing station identification spots for the network, exclaiming the signature line, I want my MTV!, and other phrases. Over the years, MTV would gather a large list of slogans.

In order to give music fans a place to see constant, commercial-free music videos, once the original MTV had started concentrating on reality show and soap operas. MTV2 was launched on August 1, 1996. Today its current sister of MTV, MTV2 airs a selection music videos, other music-related specials, and non-music shows focused on youth culture and pop culture. These shows are aimed at viewers in their teens and early 20s.

Timeframe of the use of MTV2 Logo

Timeline & Highlights of MTV2

Year 1999
MTV2 is not what it is used to be now during the launch of this new channel. MTV2 was originally known as just M2 until the first quarter of 1999.
Music Style: show more alternative types of music and older music videos than regular MTV did in 1996.

Year 2000
Starting on January 1, 2000, in honor of the millennium, MTV2 attempted to play every music video in the MTV library in alphabetical order. While a majority of videos were played, many were skipped over. The special ended in mid-April 2000. Partially through the special, MTV2 changed its scheduling from three 8-hour blocks a day to two 12-hour blocks a day, so that it would finish sooner and so the channel would be able to return to airing new videos again.
Music Style: play every music video in the MTV library in alphabetical order

Year 2001
As part of the January 1, 2001 relaunch of the channel, MTV2 started to show commercials and began to separate the types of videos it played by genre.
Music Style: Hip-hop, Rock and Soul music.

Year 2002
A three-hour block of dance and techno, which featured some more obscure music by little-known techno DJ's, but also incorporated the videos for mainstream, popular dance songs, by artists such as Amber and Kylie Minogue. Started to air more shows and controversial videos.

Year 2003
Beginning of 2003, MTV2 phased out the format of exclusively music videos, instead adopting a new slogan, "Where the music's at," and featuring other music-related shows instead of 24/7 videos. Past MTV Icon specials, news documentaries, and countdowns were all as likely to be shown on MTV2 as videos. However, MTV2 still continued to show innovative and up-and-coming musicians and videos, as well as mainstream videos.

Year 2004
of 2004, MTV2 once again updated its schedule to include more genre-separated blocks and less variety.

Year 2005
The relaunch of the channel also brought the introduction of a completely new logo: a two-headed dog. The previous boxes logo and MTV's famous block logo were eliminated from the new MTV2 logo, implying that the new channel would be nothing like the current MTV. Billboard Radio Monitor reported that the two heads of the dog were made to represent rock and hip-hop, the two sides of music on MTV2.

Year 2006
As 2006 began, most of MTV2's programming continued moving with the general trend that had already started years earlier. Despite the removal of MTV's famous block logo from MTV2's logo in 2005, the channel increased its ties to MTV, airing a broader selection of repeats of other MTV shows that fit in with the "outrageous" theme, as well as some others with no certain theme.

Competitors out in the market.

Channel [V] is an international music channel chain. Owned by STAR TV, it is aired in many countries around Australasia, Asia and the Middle East. They play both mainstream and alternative music, with some focus on local music. Mainly English music is played, though the country-specific channels do play content of their own mother tongue.

The letter V is the subject of many theories, but none of them are confirmed as to what the letter stands for. The leading theory points to V for victory. Another theory pits the V as a random end alphabet popular in Asia such as XYZ. Another possible theory is V as in video.

Channel [V] International has a slightly bigger audience in Asia than MTV Asia as it airs in more countries. They are known for providing original and interactive music programming, with TV shows such as Bid It, The Ticket, Poparazzi,(formerly know as Smash Hits) , and many others.

Fuse is a music video-oriented television channel. Fuse has modeled itself as the premier cable channel for rock, alternative, punk, hardcore, emo, and indie music. ( Having the same goal as MTV2 which focus mainly on rock and hiphop, a very clear target audience). Fuse has become an important outlet for many bands looking to reach a more mainstream audience.

However, as of 2006, it has been moved to the early morning hours as Fuse no longer focuses on it. Although hip-hop/rap and pop music is played, Fuse is generally an alternative to the more mainstream MTV, which focuses heavily on hip-hop. In recent years Fuse has been instrumental in helping local bands and artists reach a wider audience.

INITIAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT ON MY CHOSEN CONCEPT.

Facts about Hourglass, the sands of time.

Widely known as a non mechanical device which is used to keep time in the past. An hourglass usually measures the passing of an hour, although it can be used to measure different units of time. Some hourglasses measure just a few seconds, while others measure minutes and some even measure days.

There are actually alot of factors that will affect the accurate measurement of the time. An hourglass is often constructed out of glass, as its name denotes, but it can also be made of plastic. An hourglass has two hollow bulbs connected by a narrow opening. The bulbs contain sand, which trickles through the opening between the top and bottom bulb. When all the sand has fallen to the bottom bulb, a particular amount of time has passed.

The hourglass was invented sometime in the 14th century. Before the advent of mechanical clocks, hourglasses where commonly used for nautical purposes, cooking and the timing of church services, among other things. Because each hourglass marks only one period of time, we can imagine that our ancestors must have had a large collection of hourglasses. One notable hourglass has achieved fame in the classic book and movie The Wizard of Oz.

The suspense filled scenes in which the hourglass trickles away Dorothy's hope of a rescue makes the hourglass familiar to many generations. That is when hourglass became more well known at that point of time.

Today hourglasses are often used in board games to mark a player's turn or the duration of a task. An hourglass can also be a fun way to time daily chores and other tasks. Hourglasses also make beautiful collector's pieces due to their elegant style and variations in design. It is beyond the purpose of what it is used to measure time in the past but something that is more of a design collection for today's generation.

The History of Time ( research on stuff use to measure time)

SUNDIAL

Sundials were first used in ancient Greece. However, probably invented before that in China around about 1450 BC. Sundials work by casting a shadow as the sun moves from East to West. They are limited to telling the time over a 10-12 hour period.

WATER CLOCKS

Water were invented in the first few centries BC. It worked by releasing water into another container at a controlled rate. The early models were probably not very exact, just like Sundials, but their mechanism would have been refined over time.

HOURGLASSES

Just like the water clocks, the hour glass clock worked in the same way by sand going into another chamber. it was not a very affecent way of telling time.

MECHANICAL CLOCKS

The first mechanical clocks appeared in the 13th century. Huygens, a clock maker from central Europe, invented the pendulum clock, in 1657. After that, clocks that used coils, springs and cogs became more refind. From the 13th century to the 18th century became more complex and available.

QUARTZ CRYSTAL CLOCKS

The digital clock was invented, in 1956. Digital clocks and watches use a quartz crystal & battary. The use of this electra - Magnetic enery mean that the time telling is more accurate.

Research on Material/Texture use for Hourglass.

After doing some research at the library and on the net. Hourglass can be make from different material ranging from Glass, Plastic, PVC, Wood, Metal or even iron. Traditional hourglass are always make up of wood and different materials are able to give the different outlook of the hourglass. Therefore, there's a consideration of choosing one material that suits the best for my idea.

Elements that run through the hourglass.

It can be in the form of Lava, Water, Glass chip, Sand or even Typography of MTV.

Research on 3D Scene.

In order to give a better idea of how my hourglass is going to look like in 3D scene. I decided to explore and do research on people's work. It gave me a better picture on the different effects that Maya can produced. Ranging from something very 3D like to a very realistic outlook.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT ON MY CHOSEN CONCEPT.

Inspiration.

I actually get alot of inspiration from this sketch of mine after doing research about shapes, texture, material and the history of time. Eventually i started sketching all kinds of hourglass and this piece gave me lots of inspiration for further development.

The initial sketch of this is an hourglass with lots of curvy vines around the pillar of it and i started to improvise my sketches from there. With vines targeted as the ambient of the place with lots of vines twirling around instead of just nucleating around the hourglass.

Eventually i did some reseach on vines. A vine is any similar climbing or trailing plant. It a fast growing plant and able to colonize large areas quickly, even without climbing high. It gave me the concept of MTV2 being just like vines which are very adaptable and flexible where they always try their best to get into the spot that has the greatest sunlight and they are able to colonize large area quickly just like what MTV2 wanted to do.

Since vines are very adaptable and flexible that it tries their best to reach out for sunlight. I thought of having my whole concept being set in a dark tunnel where there is only a source of light appearing at the back where all the vines will be reaching out for and having hourglass placed at there. Therefore the whole concept portraying MTV2 a very fast and rapid channel that reach out to the audience quickly and get to colonize large place rapidly just like the vines.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Initial Modelling.

This picture that i found actually gave me a rough idea on how i should kickstart to model the different parts of the hourglass.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Complexity in this Assignment.

I actually faced some difficulties during the process of animation like creating emitter & particles. I have to make an effort to study how particles work and the complex thing that i faced was having the need to replace those particles with M, T, and V typography in which the sand will morph into mtv typography during the animation.

I had to explore the Instancer (Replacement) in order to replace those particles with the m,t, and v typography.

Creating smoke using blobby clouds was a new thing to me and at the very end of the rendering, i realise that the method of rendering between blobby clouds and streaks particles is different. They have to be render differently in mayasoftware and mayahardware respectively and then combined together using another software. But i managed to solve the problem by using the blobbdy clouds as the sand instead of streak particles.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Brief process of the modelling.

I started my 3D by modelling out the hourglass and applying texure onto it.

That is when i started to animate MTV block logo after the hourglass modelling, in the same time exploring the different ways of using particles and instance replacement tools.

For my next part, twirl like vines were created to give a rough idea of the whole ambient outlook. At this point of time, i began to play with particles by transforming it into blobby clouds and forming it into smoke.

Tunnels were built out from a box and i started to apply textures to the vines and the box.

Camera were then placed in the 3D scene and i started to animate how the camera should move in the tunnel. In addition, to edit the previous animation like particles and the position of the hourglass.

Summary

For this last assignment, i must said that this is the part where we get to put in all those technical skills and knowledge that we had learnt for the past 2 semester during the 3D lesson. Furthermore, this assignment allows me to be more independent instead of relying too much on lecturer to spoon feed us.

I get to learn new stuff which have not been teach in class like creating emitter and make an effort to study and explore on how about creating particles and replace it with other elements. Time management plays a very important role when it comes to such projects.
